Happy Tewo is not bothered to be referred to as a four-rounder – a term which many promoters in East London use when they tease their colleagues who are still finding their footing in the promotion of professional boxing.

Four rounds are fought by beginners in competitive boxing. Tewo has served his internship and has already staged international championship fights.

To prove that he is ready to mix it with the big boys, his Tewo Boxing Promotion is now recognised by the IBF. He will make an introduction to the New York-based sanctioning body on Sunday by way of an IBF intercontinental junior flyweight title fight at ICC Hall on Sunday.

Former SA and WBO global junior flyweight champion Nhlanhla Tyirha will oppose Filipino Orlie Silvestre for that title in the main attraction.

Tyirha scribbled his name in the annals of SA boxing by winning the national junior flyweight title in only his fourth professional fight in the year he made his debut in 2018.

Tyirha goes into the fight on Sunday boasting three consecutive wins against Silvestre’s homeboys – Esneth Domingo, Jaysever Abcede and Joey Canoy – to better his CV to seven wins against a loss.

Victory for the 22-year-old gifted youngster, whose skills are honed by Khangelani Jack in Mdantsane, will impact positively on his IBF rating. He is currently rated at No 14.

Tyirha’s career is guided by Rumble Africa Promotions, which has a cordial working relationship with Tewo.

“Tewo and Rumble has a cordial relationship and actually we share the same vision, which is mainly about unearthing talent now for a better tomorrow,” said Tewo.

“This tournament is about growth for me as a promoter and all the fighters in the card that will feature because most of them are unknown. It is very important to provide a platform for unknown fighters.

“Look, Asemahle Wellem won the SA super middleweight title in his fourth fight [on October 1]. The first three fights he had are more important tham the fourth fight because he showed his character early and putting him in the ring for the national title was due to the confidence we had in his skills set.”
