I've no point to prove against AmaZulu – Memela

Striker says Bay's record in derbies won't help

Talismanic Richards Bay playmaker Luvuyo Memela has made it clear he has no point to prove against his former side AmaZulu.

Bay face KZN foes AmaZulu in a DStv Premiership tie at Moses Mabhida Stadium this afternoon (5pm). Memela, 35, was one of Usuthu's key players last season, hence the club's decision not to retain him came as a surprise. The Natal Rich Boyz didn't waste time, snatching him in the off-season.

The former Orlando Pirates star has emphasised he'll treat the game against his ex-side, AmaZulu, like any other, thinking trying to be emotional or to prove a point would affect his general play on the day. Memela already boasts a goal from five league outings in Bay colours.

"I don't know what happens to other players when they play against their former teams but for me I always treat games against my former teams like any other games. Facing AmaZulu isn't personal and I won't go there and try to prove a point. There are no emotions attached to this game... it's another chance for us to get three points as a team,'' Memela told Sowetan yesterday.

"When you take these things personally, you end up playing badly. I am so cautious because I don't want anything to interfere with my play on the day. At the end of the day, it's about the team not about Memela or any other guy."

Going into this game, Natal Rich Boys have already made their presence felt in the province, having claimed the scalps of two KZN clubs in Golden Arrows and Royal AM. Even so, Memela doubts their brilliant record in derbies will count for anything this afternoon.

"Yes, we've already won two derbies [they beat Arrows 2-0 and Royal 1-0] but this game is different. Our 100% record against fellow KZN team won't help us beat AmaZulu but only determination will.''
