The call by Gauteng premier Panyaza Lesufi for one exam for all matriculants is misplaced and unfortunate.

Academic freedom and freedom of choice are enshrined in our constitution. Is Lesufi’s next step going to be a call for all faculties at universities to set the same paper?

South Korea addressed the same problem by increasing the time allocated to teaching maths at schools. The results were astonishing.

Education is crucial for the economic development. A skilled workforce is essential for a strong economy. Lesufi should identify gifted black pupils at primary schools and persuade the government to enrol them at IEB shools. This will be the single-most important step in alleviating poverty in the black community.
