Soweto Marathon Trust spokesperson Thokozani Mazibuko has revealed 24,000 entries have been snapped up, with less than two weeks before the race takes place at FNB Stadium on November 5.
Mazibuko also said they would keep the entries open until November 4 as excitement builds up for the People’s Race.
Entry fees are R380 for the marathon, R300 for the 21.1km and R280 for the 10km races.
“The entries have picked up. Yesterday [Monday] we had 300 entries for the first time in a day since we opened them and I can tell you that we’ve reached 24,000 already,” Mazibuko told Sowetan yesterday.
“We are happy with the progress so far and we expect more runners to register in the next few days.”
Following uncertainty before African Bank came in to sponsor the race, Mazibuko said runners were not sure if the race would go ahead, hence they were slow to register.
“It’s only now that runners realise that the race will go ahead and we know that many like to enter at the last minute,” he said.
“So, we have decided to keep the entries open until the last day, which will be November 4 at 7pm. Remember, some people are coming from far away and will be phoning us to say ‘please don’t close’.
“What I can encourage the runners [to do] is to enter, as you see our main sponsors are giving out a lot of prizes. Even though we had targeted 50,000 runners, the truth is we are not going to reach that.”
Runners pass a few significant heritage sites on the marathon route, which include the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, Walter Sisulu Square, the Regina Mundi Catholic Church, Morris Isaacson High School, Vilakazi Street and the Hector Pieterson Memorial.
The starting time for the marathon is 5.30am, 6.30am for the 21.1km race and 7.30am for the 10km race.
