Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane believes the team’s successful pre-season has set them on a path to achieve even greater things.
The Absa Premiership log leaders are on course to win the title as they are 10 points ahead of second-placed Bidvest Wits with eight games to go.
“At Sundowns you are expected to win and it is important to win - all the time. We started with pre-season trophies and they don’t mean a lot, but they give a direction,” ‘Jingles’ told TMG Digital.
The Tshwane kicked off their pre-season training in July with a trip to Zambia, where they beat two locals sides Zesco United and Mufulira Wanderers.
They completed their tour with a 1-1 draw against Nchanga Rangers, before returning home to win the Etv Charity Cup in preparation for the 2015/16 season.
“We told ourselves that we have to win every silverware that we see... We did well with the smaller cups in pre-season and they might not have been so important, because they are pre-season cups. But the message behind that is that you get to instil in the team the culture of winning trophies. Now the boys say the culture of winning is in their DNA,” he said.
The former Bafana Bafana mentor was also full of praise for his technical and management team at the club, saying it cannot be a one-man show.
“People are looking at the game and the results, but they forget about match preparation. They forget about player management and above all, it is the playing attitude,” Mosimane highlighted.
“Also, which cup competition is important? Is it the league, Champions League, the Nedbank Cup? That’s where the problem is, hence you need a lot of people to do work. I’m happy that I’m surrounded by good personnel that I’ve brought into the team.
“The load is heavy… Gone are the days when the coach used to do everything. No, you got to trust these people. They are not chancers and they went to school. They’ve studied what they are doing and I’ve got three guys on sports science degrees. It is unbelievable and I don’t have a degree, so I’ve got to listen. They know more than me, so it is important that I have a good support structure,” he added.
Sundowns have a chance to fight for another trophy when they clash against Highlands Park on Sunday in the last 32 of the Nedbank Cup.
Kick-off is set for 15:00 at Makhulong Stadium in Tembisa.
