Some political commentators have previously accused the SACP of riding on the popularity of the ANC and of being unwilling to fly its socialist flag solo when it comes to elections.

This week the party has called its detractors' bluff, saying it will field its own candidates "at all levels of government" in the 2009 election.

Questions have been raised, though, whether the announcement was not posturing ahead of the ANC national policy conference.

On the other hand, questions have been asked whether the SACP is not overestimating its clout in trying to take on the ANC in an election.

There is only one force that can provide the answers - the voters, come 2009.
