Flying the red flag

Some political commentators have previously accused the SACP of riding on the popularity of the ANC and of being unwilling to fly its socialist flag solo when it comes to elections.

This week the party has called its detractors' bluff, saying it will field its own candidates "at all levels of government" in the 2009 election.

Questions have been raised, though, whether the announcement was not posturing ahead of the ANC national policy conference.
