Third time lucky for awards

LIMPOPO sportsmen and women will finally, hopefully, be honoured by the provincial department of sports, arts and culture in Polokwane on Saturday.

This comes after the Limpopo Sports Awards were postponed twice.

They were originally planned for July 23, then rescheduled for July 30. They have now been scheduled to take place on Saturday at Marco Hall in Polokwane.

Departmental spokesperson Adel van der Linde said the postponements were caused by logistics that needed to be attended to.

"The event has been rescheduled to give us time to address other logistics. It will be all systems go come Saturday," Van der Linde said yesterday.

Some of the nominees are Springbok players Victor Matfield and John Smit, Nathi Lions assistant coach Sello "Skorokoro" Chokoe and Safa president Kirsten Nematandani.

Other nominees for the awards are Guillo "Sdumo" Marapyane, Tidima Kekana and Vatisa Mhlumbulwa, representing softball, while Cassius Baloyi and his father Eric Baloyi were nominated in the boxing category.

Former Spar Netball South Africa assistant coach Cecilia Molokwane was nominated in the netball category.

In the cricket category Dale Steyn leads the pack, which includes Ethy Mbhalati, Mandla Mashimbyi and Marcia Letsoalo.

Vodacom League side Baroka FC are favourites to win the team of the year award after their surprise victories over Moroka Swallows and Kaizer Chiefs in the Nedbank Cup despite the fact that they failed to gain promotion to the National First Division.
