Bidvest Wits eased with relative comfort into next month’s MTN8 final after emphasising the gulf in class between themselves and new boys Cape Town City by dominating Saturday’s second leg even though it ended goalless after 90 minutes.

Wits, who had won last weekend’s first leg in Johannesburg in comfortable fashion, took the tie 3-0 on aggregate and now wait to see whether they meet Chippa United or Mamelodi Sundowns in the one-off final.

City coach Eric Tinkler had spoken before the game of the need to attack from the outset to try and reduce the large deficit but the home team hardly got out of their own half in the first stanza as Wits put on an exhibition of their obvious superiority. For a side who needed to be on the constant offensive, City took 64 minutes to force their first corner.

Wits won almost all the early midfield challenges, constantly broke through the City defence but missed a myriad of chances to the growing irritation of coach Gavin Hunt. “It was really upsetting not to score, but we go through that’s the most important thing. We could play until into the week after and still not score!” he thundered.

Frank Mhango came closest for Wits with a thunderous left footed volley in the 40th minute that cannoned back off the upright. Thabang Monare, Elias Pelembe and Daine Klate were all guilty of missing easy chances.

In fact, the game produced a solitary three efforts on target amid more than 30 overall attempts in a vivid display of the goal crisis in the domestic football.

City did have a little purple patch near the end and Judas Moseamedi almost won the game for the home team as Nazeer Allie cleared his header off the line in stoppage time.

Wits are in the final for the first time in 21 years and will know the identity of their opponents on Wednesday night.
