Kaizer Chiefs boss Kaizer Motaung has again come to the defence of embattled coach Steve Komphela, arguing that it is not right to judge him on his first season at the club.

Amakhosi, who have had such a bad season that Motaung has conceded even finishing "second would be great", have endured a terrible winless run stretching five games, in which they have also failed to score. They are set to finish the season without a trophy.

But Motaung dropped a strong hint that Komphela will retain his job for next season, although he promised the squad would be improved. "Our supporters are spoilt, and when you lose one or two games, you are not good enough," said Motaung yesterday.

While the team is struggling, Motaung expects Chiefs fans to show their support and in turn, he'll keep a cool head to try find the solutions.

"You cannot tell me that Man United supporters today won't go to the stadium because they are not challenging for the league. I mean, every game you go there the stadium is full. There are teams that are right at the bottom of the [English] Premiership and when they play games, the stadiums are full," he said.

"It is a question of culture, whether the supporters want to go to the stadiums and support their teams or they want to go to the stadium to make demands like tell the coach who to play. Our culture is different in South Africa. Our supporters take it too far instead of giving the coach time," he argued.

Motaung maintained this was not the time to press panic buttons.

"No, there are no [pressing] panic buttons. If you do that it shows that you don't know what you are doing. There is no regret [hiring Komphela]. We can start judging him from next season onwards because he would have had enough time to tweak the team the way he wants it.

"We've got an ageing squad and we have players that we have brought in, but obviously we have to replenish the side. We have to bring in new players next season. It won't be a wholesale change like we did before Stuart Baxter came. When Baxter came, we bought about eight new players. But I think we are going to tweak the squad and make sure we get it right."
