It's tough in NFD - Jomo

JOMO Cosmos owner-coach, Jomo Sono, yesterday conceded that the going is very tough in the National First Division this season.

After his charges were beaten 2-0 by Polokwane City at the University of Limpopo's Oscar Mpetha Stadium on Sunday, Sono said his boys conceded soft goals from set pieces.

"We were too defensive in the first half in a bid to absorb the pressure, something we did excellently. We only lost it in the opening five minutes of the second half when we failed to defend set pieces.

"This is a clear indication of how tough it is in the NFD. We will work more on our defence for our next match," he said.

His counterpart at City, Duncan "King" Lechesa, praised his players for a job well done.

"Our boys showed no respect to Cosmos from the opening minute. They showed composure and commitment. We attacked from all angles only to be denied by the Cosmos keeper (Bafana Khoza), who was at his best in the first half.

"This victory will motivate us as we prepare for our home match against Milano United tomorrow. I must concede that Cosmos were tough opponents but we managed to overpower them," Lechesa said. "Our major concern is that we are inconsistent, that is why we are finding it so hard to move out of the relegation zone."

City's goals were scored in the second half by Siphesihle Nzimande and former Cosmos player Esau Kanyenda.

Elsewhere, Santos maintained their winning streak when they defeated Sivutsa Stars at Athlone Stadium to move to third spot on the log with 23 points from 15 matches, just six points behind log leaders Mpumalanga Black Aces who were surprisingly defeated 2-1 by FC AK at Eldorado Park Stadium.

The results are:

Vasco da Gama 2, Roses United 1; African Warriors, 1 Thanda Royal Zulu 1; Blackburn Rovers 1, Dynamos 0; FC AK 2, Aces 1; Witbank Spurs 2, Milano United 0; Santos 2, Sivutsa Stars 1.
