Mchunu regrets Mwekassa's loss

THABISO Mchunu says his chances of avenging his loss to Zack "Black Warrior" Mwekassa were shattered when Danie "Tshwane Tornado" Venter blew away the man from Congo in the fourth round on Saturday night.

Mchunu was stopped in six rounds by Mwekassa last year.

"The Rock" said he was rooting for Mwekassa to win against Venter so that they would meet in the final of the Nashua Super 8 Last Man Standing cruiserweight championship on November 10.

"Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against Danie," explained Mchunu, who stopped Flo "Black Panther" Simba in the first round of the first semifinal on Saturday night.

"It's just that I doubt if I will ever get the opportunity to fight Zack and avenge my defeat, which by the way was a fluke."

But Venter upset the bookies by blowing away Mwekassa, the 22-10 hot favourite, in the fourth round to win the second semifinal.

Mwekassa went down twice before being counted out while lying on his back.

Mchunu said he cried for the whole month after losing to Mwekassa.

"I just couldn't sleep. That is why I wanted him badly. Either I was unfit or over-trained for that fight.

"I was also becoming complacent because I was undefeated ever since I fought my first professional fight in 2007," said Mchunu, who made up for his loss to Mwekassa by stopping Simba in the first round on June 16.

Simba's management protested to Boxing SA that referee Tony Nyangiwe stopped the fight too soon and it was agreed that the decision will stand but the two fighters must meet again.

Mchunu attacked Simba from the outset last weekend, closing his right eye before forcing referee Philip Durandt to intervene before Simba got seriously hurt.

Mchunu did not even build up a sweat for his eighth KO from 11 wins. The KwaZulu-Natal warrior, who was ushered to battle by Sean Smith, will meet Venter in the final at Emperors Palace on November 10.

Promoter Rodney Berman said the winner will go home with the African Boxing Union cruiserweight title and R300000 while the loser will have to settle for R200000.
