SOUTH African sprinter Thuso Mpuang wants to better his 100m personal best time, which he hopes will assist him to do well in his specialty event, the 200m, at the 2012 London Olympics.

His personal best in the 100m is 10.16 seconds and 20.53 in the 200m event.

"For me to do well in the 200m, I have to run faster in the 100m as part of my training," said Mpuang, a student at the University of Free State.

"It is pretty early for me to worry about qualifying. I know that I will be part of Team SA at the Olympics.

"Right now I am channelling all my energies into training as I want to make sure I'm in the best of shape when we leave for London.

"My plan is to qualify here at home during the SA track and field season and improve the time during the European season."

Mpuang is delighted with his performance after winning the 200 at the 2012 Yellow Pages interprovincial series at Germiston Stadium on Saturday in a time of 20.84.

"I'm not yet in top form but it's good that I won," Mpuang said.

Another top 200m athlete, Lebogang Moeng, was second in 20.97 with Kagiso Kumbane third in 21.15.

The lanky Free Stater urged authorities to take care of athletes if SA is to win more medals at the London Olympics. "It is disappointing that most top athletes do not get any financial support. Some of us are students, which makes it even worse. The whole thing must change."
