Simba tries to shake demons

TONIGHT marks the long-awaited return to the ring of Flo "The Black Panther" Simba.

The heavyweight sensation must shake off the demons of his defeat by Francois "White Buffalo" Botha in June.

The twinkling starlet takes on the relatively experienced Thamsanqa Dube in a non-title fight that will top the "Blockbuster" six-bout bill at Emperors Palace.

The box-and-dine tournament will be staged by Golden Gloves Promotions and African Ring.

Simba is one of the rising stars at Golden Gloves.

Before his sixth-round stoppage by Botha, the vastly experienced 42-year- old former International Boxing Federation and World Boxing Federation champion, Simba had been riding the crest of the wave.

He had been undefeated in 10 fights with nine KOs. At 21, he still has a long way to go and a lot to learn but the first step begins tonight.

Simba's corner will be manned by Elias Tshabalala because his trainer Harold Volbrecht is in Mississippi with his other charge, Thomas "Tommy Gun" Oosthuizen.

Dube, 28, from Zimbabwe, is a credible opponent with 12 wins (seven KOs) against two losses. He left an impression at Emperors Palace in 2009 when he stopped the tough Jake Els in eight rounds for the World Boxing association Pan African title on April 2. Els had stopped eight of his nine victims but was stopped by Osborne Machimana when he was still national champion.

Dube, just like Machimana, does not rely on power alone but also has impressive boxing skills, a plodding jab and beautiful lateral movement.

The main undercard bout is an intriguing light-heavyweight clash between national champion Tshepang Mohale and Ryno Liebenberg. On paper it appears to be a mismatch - Mohale has eight wins (seven KOs) against three defeats while Liebenberg has three wins in as many fights.

In other bouts, Sylvester Zaki faces Michael van Heerden in a junior middleweight clash, Warren Joubert faces Raymond Mbondunda (junior lightweight), Adam de Moor takes on Gideon Maake (junior welterweight) and lightweight Jared Silverman takes on Jan Jonker.
