Khunou will test 'Mr Cool's' mettle

SOME people are born with the desire to succeed at all costs and rising boxing star Oupa "Mr Cool" Maimane seems to have that competitive streak

Maimane, 19, has won 42 of his 50 fights. He was beaten in the finals of the All Africa Games and South African Championships.

Maimane made an impressive debut in the professional ranks on May 14 last year. He outclassed Jared Silverman, who drew a huge crowd at Nasrec Arena.

On Sunday Maimane, who has five wins, will look to improve on that when he takes on the tough Richard Khunou over six rounds at Toekomsrus Community Hall.

Khonou, from Alexandra, will best be remembered for punishing Mervin Liensburg so badly that he ran to his corner and slipped through the ropes in the first round on September 5 last year.

"I saw Khunou twice," said Maimane's trainer Winston Mokone yesterday. "He is a very strong boxer. This is good test for Oupa." The fight forms part of People Promotions' 10 bouts. The main event features local boy Nicholas Modibeng against Sifiso Mthethwa from Orange Farm.

Vusi Dladla will fight Theophilas Mphakane while promoter Obed Molekwa's son Shadrack will take on Phumlani Majola. Casta Ndou will fight Ben Moakamela.
