Sibaya raring to face Chiefs

NEW Moroka Swallows recruit MacBeth Sibaya is itching to make his debut for the Birds

And the Bafana Bafana strongman says he could not have asked for a better time to mark his debut for Swallows than against Kaizer Chiefs tonight

"I feel ready to play Chiefs and I am excited about the possibility of facing them," said Sibaya, who joined Swallows on a six-month contract last week after an eight-year stint with Russian side Rubin Kazan.

"The last time I played against Chiefs I scored a goal and this really inspired me to face them tomorrow (today)."

Sibaya added that former Bafana Bafana teammates Siphiwe Tshabalala and Reneilwe Letsholonyane referred to him as "uncle", a sign of respect, which he does not expect to see for 90 minutes tonight.

Though Sibaya said he was fit to play tonight, his mentor Gordon Igesund doubts his fitness.

"Physically he is okay but his match fitness might be a problem... I'll make the decision in the next 24 hours," Igesund said yesterday.

This Soweto derby takes place at Loftus Stadium in Pretoria and kickoff is at 7.30pm.

Swallows come into this game on the back of a 1-0 win over Maritzburg United last week and back-to-back victories would do them a world of good.

But Chiefs, who are gunning for a first league title since their back-to-back wins in the 2003-04 and 2004-05 seasons, will want to add to Swallows' misery.

Perhaps the Swallows supporters and their players had hoped to play a smaller team after the Maritzburg United game, not a Chiefs side eyeing championship glory, but not Igesund.

"We are ready to play them and I think this is the right time to play them. This match could not have come at a better time for us because we are on the up," Igesund said.

"Chiefs are a quality side because even when (Knowledge) Musona was not scoring, Kaizer Motaung Jnr has managed to score. S'thembiso Ngcobo has also been scoring but I really believe that we'll get something out of that match," he said.

As Igesund rightly pointed out, playing without the suspended Musona will not be a train smash for Chiefs as they have shown lately that they can score from anywhere.

And with Motaung hitting top form, they remain dangerous.
