Mining company Gold One, where hundreds of miners were allegedly held hostage since Sunday, says all employees have come to ground.
The mine's head of legal, Ziyaad Hassam, said on Wednesday afternoon: "All of the miners are out and we’re just trying to see if there are any more people injured ... and the extent of the injuries.
"We think one of the people injured might need to be airlifted to hospital, so we are arranging for that. Ambulances are also here. We are going to send a team down to sweep the area just to make sure that there are no people left [underground].”
Hassam said the first group of miners surfaced on Wednesday morning.
The company on Monday said a group of Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) members were allegedly holding more than 500 National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) members hostage at the mine’s Modder East Operations in Spring, on the East Rand.
Hassam on Tuesday said they had been informed by some of the workers held captive that Amcu members were armed.
