About 100 mineworkers who have been underground since Sunday afternoon have come out.

Gold One mine head of legal Ziyaad Hassam on Wednesday morning confirmed that the miners had started walking out.

“We can confirm that approximately 100 have come out. We are still receiving them and checking on their health and wellbeing. They will be taken to the clinic,” said Hassam.

The company on Monday said a group of Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) members were allegedly holding more than 500 National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) members hostage at the mine’s Modder East Operations in Spring, on the East Rand.

“At this stage we are still investigating so that we get a sense of what is going on. I’m not aware if the police negotiator played a role in them coming out. It was a surprise to see them coming out,” he said.

Hassam on Tuesday said they had been informed by some of the workers held captive that Amcu members were armed.
