The situation is calm at Ennerdale, south of Johannesburg, with only a group of pupils joined by community members standing on the side of James Street. Motorists are now able to drive through.

Police spokesperson Captain Kay Makhubela said five people were arrested for public violence on Monday morning.

"This is after the police tried to disperse a group that was blocking James Street. They used stun grenades to disperse them but the crowd retaliated by throwing stones and bottles at the police. Police had no choice but to use rubber bullets," Makhubela said.

Makhubela said they had also opened a case of malicious damage to property after a mobile classroom was burnt at Oakdale Secondary School.

Among the people arrested is ward 7 councillor Danny Netnow.

Parents are saying that the arrest is disturbing as there was no violence. Pupils are holding placards that read "Free Councillor."
