The University of Fort Hare has been closed with immediate effect and students are expected to vacate all university residences by 5pm on Thursday.

This comes after students defied orders from the university vice-chancellor Mvuyo Tom to return to lectures by 8am on Wednesday.

In a letter issued to students and staff on Wednesday afternoon‚ Tom said students who wished to resume their studies should return to the university on October 11‚ accompanied by their parents.

Students meeting on Wednesday morning vowed that they would not return to class until the management gave them a venue for a mass meeting.

Instead‚ they received the the closure notice.

“All students are expected to have vacated the residences by 5pm on Thursday‚ residences will be reopened for that purpose on October 11 and academic activities with resume the following day‚” it said.
