Sakhile hit by protests

POLICE fired rubber bullets when Sakhile township residents used rocks, burning tyres and trash to block the R23 to Standerton, Mpumalanga police said.

POLICE fired rubber bullets when Sakhile township residents used rocks, burning tyres and trash to block the R23 to Standerton, Mpumalanga police said.

Captain Leonard Hlathi said 23 people were arrested after the incident yesterday. They were charged with public violence.

The angry residents petrol-bombed a municipal official's house during the "protest against service delivery".

"Part of the municipal speaker's house in Sakhile township in Standerton was damaged after residents petrol-bombed it during a protest on Sunday," he said.

Police were still battling to calm the situation yesterday. On Sunday residents blocked roads with rocks, burning tyres and litter. When police arrived at the scene, the crowd dispersed and no one was arrested. On Saturday, the municipal offices were set alight during the protest.

An arson docket has since been opened. - Sapa
