Reporting of violent incidents among 1,8 million pupils for the past 18 months is relatively small according to MEC for education Angie Motshekga in answers to parliamentary questions.

There were 27 stabbing incidents that required medical attention. Eighteen of the perpetrators had been disciplined. Some were suspended and others were expelled.

This was before the fatal samurai-sword attack at Nic Diedericks Technical School.

There were 16 cases of child abuse, eight of which were sexual.

At least 13 of the cases involved physical violence, while 11 were perpetrated by minors. One was perpetrated by an adult.

How many cases were not reported or covered up? How accurate are the statistics?

How many schools would rather not report such incidents for fear that the school would get a bad name?

The DA calls for accurate data collection and reporting. Then, a fairer picture will emerge enabling corrective action to be taken in schools where there is a high incidence of violence.
