Michael Retsilisitsoe was a dedicated educator and community leader with a vision to groom tomorrow's leaders.
Bra Mixon, as he was known in the community, gave back to his community long after he retired.
His love for education and children prompted him to start the Stepping Stone Pre-school and he also initiated a soccer team to nurture young talent.
Retsilisitsoe enjoyed playing softball with young people because he was too energetic for his peers. For relaxation he wrote songs and conducted choirs.
Born on October 15 1942 at Masheang in Free State, he was the eldest of six children.
He went to Zastron Lower Primary and Wilberforce Secondary School in Evaton, but did not matriculate there because of his active involvement in the PAC.
He registered with the joint matriculation board and passed matric with distinctions. He enrolled for medicine at the University of the North, but ended up pursuing a BA.
He started teaching at a farm school in Arlington before he qualified. In 1965 he became a circuit officer in Bethlehem.
In 1969 he moved to the QwaQwa education department where he was influential in establishing the QwaQwa department of education.
In 1974 he continued studying and in 1976 became Tshiya College of Education's principal.
He was also principal of Dinare Junior Secondary, Lekgulo Senior Secondary, Molaladitwe Secondary, Molapo Junior Secondary, Manthatisi Senior Secondary and Metsi-Matsho Senior Secondary.
He married Monocua Vally Nokwanda Thabethe. They had six children.
He is survived by his wife and three children. He will be buried tomorrow in Phuthaditjaba. The service starts at 8am at the United Reformed church.
