A woman has been arrested at Vuwani in Limpopo in connection with the armed robbery from a stokvel of which she is a member.

Inspector Elaijah Malatjie said the suspect, 31, was arrested on Monday after the secretary of the stokvel was robbed at gunpoint on Sunday.

Unknown men followed her after she had alighted from a taxi at Vuwani and took the plastic bag she was carrying, which contained R26995 in cash.

The stokvel has 40 members.

The suspect did not arrive at the meeting on Sunday. But it is alleged she telephoned another member and asked who had "gone with the money".

Malatjie said: "We are still hunting for other members of the syndicate. We believe that we will arrest them soon as we already have one of their members."

The robbers fled in a car without registration numbers.

Malatjie said that the suspect will appear in court soon.

He warned stokvel members not to carry large sums of money, but deposit it in banks to avoid being soft targets for planned robberies.
