A high-class and competitive field has been declared for the R560000 Emerald Cup, Grade two, over 1400m at the Vaal on Sunday, 23 September.

Narc, whose form on the sand track at the Vaal is virtually impeccable, spearheads the field and bids for a hat trick in his first run in a feature race.

Trainer Bradley Maroun's runner will carry a top weight of 60kg. He has performed consistently well under welterweights in the past and will this time have the services of master jockey Pierre Strydom.

Dynamite Mike, who will be partnered by jockey Weichong Marwing, has run twice on the Vaal sand. He has won both starts, including the Riverside Handicap last season. Marwing will go all out to lower Narc's colours. He will be carrying 1,5kg less than his rival.

The race was so well supported with 24 final acceptances, that Phumelela has decided to stage a consolation race worth R120000.

Racing executive, Graeme Hawkins, said: "Only 12 horses can run in the Emerald Cup, so we decided to put on a consolation race to accommodate those horses who had to be eliminated. The two reserve runners in the Emerald Cup, To and Fro, and Escobar, will run in the consolation race if there are no scratchings from the final field."

The Emerald Spring Derby next weekend, when the Hampton Handicap headlines Saturday's card with the Emerald Cup, Vaal River Handicap and the Cup consolation on Sunday, promises to provide not only exciting racing, but some exceptional off the turf action too.

Little Hampton, one of the best dirt horses South Africa has produced, will be the lead horse on Hampton Handicap day, while the popular Kurt Darren will be a big draw card on Sunday. Another of the weekend's highlights will be the Mr and Miss Emerald Spring Derby pageant semi-final on Saturday and the final on Sunday.
