Metrorail aims to help so give them a chance

Like other train commuters, I have always been quick to criticise Metrorail for every train delay and the incompetence of its staff.

Like other train commuters, I have always been quick to criticise Metrorail for every train delay and the incompetence of its staff.

The company acknowledges that trains are not user-friendly to the physically challenged and elderly people, particularly the blind and those who use wheelchairs. Some stations catering for thousands of commuters daily do not have adequate shelter and toilet facilities or coffee shops where some of the commuters can relax while waiting for trains.

Some do not even have benches where commuters can sit.

That's going to change, says chief executive of the South African Rail Commuter Corporation, Lucky Montana.

The company says it will beef up its police unit to have 5000 recruits by 2015. Montana noted the human factor in inefficiency by some members of staff and violent protests by a section of commuters, which have a negative on good delivery of services.

Without sounding like a praise singer, I honestly believe Metrorail is sincere.

I also believe Metrorail can engage the services of civic organisations to call residents' meetings to explain the company's plans. Commuters should not vent their frustrations and torch trains .
