July fashion hits and misses

WE KNOW that the Durban July is not a fashion show. At the same time it's not a costume event. It's important to be practical: anyone who comes to the event dressed ridiculously deserves all the misery and ridicule. In the same breath, those who crack it deserve all the praise. Sowetan looks at the hits and misses of Saturday's event.

Hits

Noni Gasa was one of the best-dressed people at the racecourse. She looked stunning in her Avant dress and we liked her shoes designed by Budi, a local girl.

Sonia Sedibe and her hubby, sorry friend, Thandi Masondo played it safe with their short dresses.

AKA got it right in his blue military jacket by Pale Homme.

It looks like this designer dressed the whole racecourse. Homme also dressed Vusi Kunene. We're not complaining - they all looked stunning.

Tira also got it right with his House of Ole outfit. I wish I could say the same about his friends L'vovo, Fisherman and DJ Twittey. They looked like they were going to a hobo show.

Zizo Beda's pencil dress made of ethnic fabric looked fabulous. She kept it simple.

Augustine Chuene dressed appropriately for her age.

Selimathunzi's Lunga Shabalala was probably the best-dressed man at the event. He kept it clean and sophisticated and as always he had a good attitude to match.

Former Miss SA Bokang Montjane, who was dressed by Rubicon, looked good in a high-waist pencil skirt and a white shirt with puff-up sleeves.

Zakes Batwini never disappoints. He looked hot in his suit.

Muvhango's Dingaan Mokebe also got it right. He has put on a bit of weight and is looking yummy.

Misses

TV presenter and actress Phuti Khomo must have been the worst-dressed at Greyville racecourse. She looked like a black widow waiting for her husband's insurance payout.

Mini Dlamini takes the crown as the second princess of the worst-dressed celeb. She looked like a desert warrior queen in a transparent dress. The peplum silhouette was on point but the mermaid part of the dress killed the whole look. She got the Durban July pack hot under the collar with her see-through dress.

Chasing Unathi Nkayi's red carpet wardrobe malfunctions is like trying to follow HHP lyrics - you need a Red Bull with a chaser just to keep up.

Another hot mess was Penny Lebyane. She got it wrong at Miss SA and yet again she had it wrong. She looked like a poor country girl in her Sunday best.

Talking of Miss SA, Melinda Bam must realise that she is the country's ambassador - that means she has to look decent. She was too flashy for a Miss SA.

Avoiding the flashes of cameras was Claire Mawisa who gave photographers a bad time. She refused to have pictures taken because she did "not want to be over-exposed". Who would want to be over-exposed in that mess of a dress that looked like a folded tent?

Another person who was allergic to picture-taking was Tsholofelo Monedi, who was popularly known as Meme in Muvhango. We got a serious tongue-lashing from her. It's amazing what overnight "fame" can do.

Top Billing presenter Jeannie D looked risqué. She came almost naked in a Gavin Rajah dress. It looked like the material got finished while Rajah was still busy with it and he decided to put in a net to tie the sides together.

Basetsana Kumalo must decide if she wants to keep it simple and elegant or continue to look like a confused matron. She always overdoes it. Meanwhile, as usual, her hubby Romeo Kumalo looked refined.

Isidingo actress Kgomotso Christopher pulled an Oscar awards' Angelina Jolie fashion stunt. Her thighs were over-exposed for a size zero girl.

As usual soccer boss Irvin Khoza and UDM leader Bantu Holomisa could not be bothered by fashion. They came wearing their usual meeting suits.

Another person who also could not be bothered was funnyman David Kau. He just looked funny.

Mika Stefano looked like a drag queen gone wrong in a dress made out of paper. The attention-seeking blogger got what he wanted: "attention".

We congratulate Top Billing's Simba Mhere for losing weight but do not agree with his choice of ill-fitting blazer with non-matching pants. For a person working for a show of Top Billing's calibre, that looked horrible.
