Simple and practical

THE Durban July is a few weeks away and public relations companies are inundated with calls from celebrities and the media to be invited.

Until now flashy businessman Mabeleni Ntuli was king of the Greyville Racecourse. His was the most sought-after marquee privé on the racecourse and an A-lister joint.

This year everyone is eying the Oasis Lifestyle Village. Launched last week it will have the who's who partying there.

"We're big this year. We'll have different performance stages and runways, but one entrance. This has never been done before," Sim Tshabalala, businessman and son of KZN Judge President Vuka Tshabalala, says.

He says the five-year-old Oasis Lifestyle marquee, which hosted 200 people before, will now accommodate 3000 .

"We will have good food, good company and performances by Teargas, Zakes Bantwini, Pro Kid and a host of Metro FM DJs among others. We will have six 200x100 marquees, and will feature fashion shows and live performances," he says.

If revellers will follow fashion shows by Uyanda Mbuli's DFC, Fundudzi and Carducci at the launch of the village last week, the fashion on the racecourse will be very practical. Big hats have been replaced with smaller fascinators and crowns.

Mbuli says the idea behind smaller hats is not to overwhelm make-up and hair styles.

"The focus will be on the face. Everyone will go for Duchess Kate Middleton's look. Her simple make-up made her look so gorgeous," Mbuli says.

She says she also decided to do things that are ultra practical.

"In interpreting the Right Royal Affair theme, we chosepractical outfits so the wearer can move around and have fun. We went for simple, classic, yet amazing pieces," she says.

Carducci showed sports jackets, not their usual formal suits. They used different colours for jackets and pants.

Fundudzi used rich colours and crowns.

"We had fun with colour," says Fundudzi head Craig Jacobs.
