Komphela to Chippa United

STEVE Komphela will move to Cape Town when the new season starts in August.

STEVE Komphela will move to Cape Town when the new season starts in August.

Sunday World can reveal that Komphela has signed a two-year contract with Chippa United.

Among his contractual conditions with Chippa, according to sources close to the coach, Komphela will take his Maritzburg United assistant coach, Mandla Ncikazi, with him.

As part of his efforts to strengthen the Cape side, Komphela, who was fired by Free State Stars last December, has already secured the services of striker David Zulu from Black Leopards. He has also identified Leopards midfielder Edgar Manaka and Polokwane City midfielder Kabelo Lichaba.

But Maritzburg say Komphela is going nowhere.

Maritzburg chairman Farouk Kadodia said yesterday that he was not worried.

"I know there are rumours about our coach and we had a meeting with him [and] he assured us that he is not going anywhere. We have a two-year option with Steve in terms of our contract. We are not worried because he told us that he is committed to the club. He has done a good job and we are looking forward to the new season with him."

Chippa United boss Chippa Mpengesi said: "It is true that I made it clear we are looking for a coach. We need somebody who will take the club to greater heights. We will mention the name of the new coach [next] week. We could not go public because the coach we want is still committed elsewhere."

Komphela could not be reached for comment. - Additional reporting by Ramatsiyi Moholoa
