Durandt jnr aims to fill dad's shoes

Damian Durandt, the son of late boxing trainer Nick Durandt, has promised to continue where his father left off and produce champions.

The senior Durandt, 53, produced more champions than any other local trainer before he retired in May last year.

He produced 30 world champions, 27 international kingpins and 95 SA title holders.

Durandt had been in the fistic game for almost 30 years.

He was assisted by Elias Tshabalala before Kenny Mabunda came on board.

Durandt later got Damian - then 14 years old - registered as a seconder. Damian is now 26 and has actually taken over the reins from this month.

"It is time to carry on the legacy and continue producing champions, not only for the gym but for South Africa," said Damian yesterday.

"I know it is going to be very difficult to fill my father's big shoes, but I will keep the Durandt name top."

Durandt junior is in charge of about six professional fighters, including the enormously talented Congolese Ilunga Makabu and former Olympian Jackson Chauke.

Damian was in the corner when Makabu pulverised Zimbabwean Chamunorwa Gonorenda in the fifth round in Brakpan on Friday night.

Durandt will be cremated in a private ceremony tomorrow instead of today as Damian had initially told Sowetan.

"The service will take place at Maronite Catholic Church in the south of Johannesburg before his body is driven to Nasrec where a memorial service will be held at Hall No 5 from 2.30pm," added the younger Durandt yesterday.
