Boxing SA does not have to look any further for 2016 Prospect's award winner - trainers Sean, Peter and George Smith have delivered that medallist in newly crowned ABU welterweight champion Thulani "Tulz" Mbenge.

The 24-year-old smiling assassin from Mdantsane is based in Gauteng. With a physique and looks resembling those of American 1976 Montreal Olympic gold medallist Sugar Ray Leonard in his early years, Mbenge is undefeated after eight bouts.

Mbenge's stunning fourth- round win against Eric Kapia Mukadi from Congo for the ABU belt at Emperors Palace last Thursday was his fourth this year.

Nominations for most of the categories in BSA's annual awards is still ongoing. The ceremony will take place next year.

Mbenge is an automatic nominee due to his consistency. But his extremely impressive performance against previously undefeated Mukadi made Mbenge the hot favourite for the award.

Mbenge did not allow Mukadi space and time to get into gear but instead forced him to focus on dodging Mbenge's fists of fury.

"I wanted to hurt him," said Mbenge. "I could see after round three that he was hurting, so I went in there to smash him. Otherwise he was a tough competitor."

Their bout headlined the Christmas Cracker bill of promoter Jeff Ellis. Earlier on, Johnny Muller stopped Herman Potgieter inside two rounds.

lGhanaian Emmanuel Tagoe outpointed Mzonke Fana for the vacant IBO lightweight title in Accra, Ghana, on Friday night.

lIn a shocker, Namibian Julius Indongo needed just 40 seconds to end the reign of IBF and IBO welterweight champion Eduard Troyanovsky in Russia on Saturday. Indongo is undefeated in 21 bouts.
