A tasty matchup between the new-look Kaizer Chiefs and a completely new team‚ Cape Town City‚ will kick off this year’s MTN8 competition on Friday‚ August 26 at Cape Town Stadium.

For Chiefs fans‚ who always turn up in numbers to their team’s matches in the Mother City‚ the quarterfinal match-up will present a second opportunity to examine coach Steve Komphela’s new direction with a side that has had a big clearout and announced a number of new signings.

The first will come a few days before when the Premier Soccer League kicks off on Tuesday‚ August 23‚ with three games‚ including one between last season’s runners-up‚ Bidvest Wits‚ and Chiefs at Bidvest Stadium.

The late start to the PSL and the reversal of roles with the MTN8‚ which normally begins a new season‚ are because of the South African men’s Olympic team’s participation at the Rio Games this month.

Last season’s fifth-placed league finishers Chiefs meet City‚ whose owner John Comitis has bought the franchise of last year’s fourth-placed PSL finishers Mpumalanga Black Aces.

Amakhosi fans will be eager to get a look at new signings Lewis Macha‚ the Zambian scorer of one of Chiefs’ goals in their 2-0 preseason Carling Black Label Cup win against Orlando Pirates at FNB Stadium on Saturday‚ Emmanuel Letlotlo‚ Mitchell Katsvairo and Edmore Chirambadare.

Among City coach Eric Tinkler’s multinational new signings are Australian midfielders James Brown and Matt Sims‚ Austrian midfielder Roland Putsche and Latvian defender Renard Rode.

Chiefs are hungry for silverware having finished last season without a trophy.

So are their fiercest rivals Pirates‚ who finished seventh in the PSL last season and meet runners-up Bidvest Wits in Saturday‚ August 27’s big quarterfinal at Bidvest Stadium.

Earlier that day Platinum Stars (third in the PSL) are scheduled to meet Chippa United (sixth) at Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg.

Sunday‚ August 28 sees the Tshwane derby between PSL champions Mamelodi Sundowns and eight-placed finishers SuperSport United.

MTN8 quarterfinals:
Friday‚ August 26: Cape Town City v Kaizer Chiefs (Cape Town Stadium‚ 8pm)
Saturday‚ August 27: Platinum Stars v Chippa United (Royal Bafokeng Stadium‚ 3pm)‚ Bidvest Wits v Orlando Pirates (Bidvest Stadium‚ 8.15pm)
Sunday‚ August 28: Mamelodi Sundowns v SuperSport United (Loftus Versfeld‚ 3pm)
