Boxing SA (BSA) is backtracking and allowing promoters to stage tournaments without depositing purse monies with the national governing body prior to tournaments.

The Boxing Act of 2001 states that "a promoter must not later than 30 days prior to the date of the tournament, or any other date specified by BSA, deposit (money) with Boxing SA in cash or by bank guaranteed cheque, the purses payable to the boxers engaged in the tournament, as well as all other monies payable through BSA".

BSA has, in the past, been sensitive to the plight of promoters and has in this regard exercised some flexibility in accepting the aforementioned monies later than stipulated.

This, BSA explained, was done to enable tournaments to go on for the sake of boxers, who have incurred monetary and physical sacrifices in preparing for the upcoming fights.

But in 2013 Boxing SA had said it would no longer exercise any flexibility in this regard.

Yet, while the national boxing governing body had successfully managed to put promoters on the straight and narrow regarding purses, two promoters were recently permitted to stage tournaments without purses being deposited - and the boxers are once again on the receiving end.

Renowned promoter Andile Sidinile staged his tournament at East London's Orient Theatre on April 22, while Phathutshedzo Dongola had his at Ngoako Ramatlhodi Sports Complex in Seshego outside Polokwane on April 29.

Xolisani Ndongeni - who fought in Sidinile's tournament - has written to BSA about the matter. Another peeved boxer, who asked to remain anonymous for fear of being victimised, said: "This guy (Dongola) warned me not to speak to the media about this."

Premier Boxing League organiser Dicksy Ngqula is yet to pay four boxers - Ndongeni, Mabhuti Sinyabi, Toto Helebe and Makazole Tete - a total of R1.6-million in prize money.

Promoter Siphatho Handi, who failed to deposit R900000 in purse monies prior to his tournament on March 22 last year, was eventually found guilty by an independent committee on allegations of misconduct in April last year.

Handi's licence was suspended for a year but he has still not paid up.

BSA chairman Muditambi Ravele said: "I want to apologise to all the affected licensees for the inconvenience. I have written to our sanctioning committee to demand clarity on this issue as to how were those tournaments sanctioned when purses had not been deposited."
