Champs stripped of titles

Nkululeko Mhlongo and France Ramabolu have been stripped of their WBA Pan African titles after fighting for another sanctioning body's belt.

Ramabolu held the WBA Pan African junior-middleweight title while Mhlongo owned the interim version of the same belt.

The WBA's Africa representative, Stan Christodoulou, said they had not met the obligation of fighting for Ramabolu's title when they clashed in Kimberley at the weekend. The Panama-based boxing body felt disrespected after the two boxers opted to meet for Mhlongo's WBF Intercontinental title.

"Both belts have been declared vacant," said Christodoulou.

The two gladiators were in action at Mitta Seperepere Convention Centre in Kimberley where Mhlongo pounded Ramabolu into submission in 10 rounds.

Trainer Harry Ramogoadi, who hones the skills of Ramabolu, said: "I was not aware of the situation of the WBA Pan African title.

"We went into the fight intending to stop Mhlongo, take a break and come back to defend the WBA Pan African belt.

"But the suspension after the stoppage against Mhlongo rules us out."

Sechaba Mabuya, who trains Mhlongo, said Christodoulou did make mention of a potential WBA sanction.

"But I thought he was referring to France because he is the champion," he said.

Ramabolu knocked out George Mdluli in four rounds for the vacant WBA Pan African belt on October 9.

Mhlongo won the interim title in November after outpointing Christiano Ndombassy, and Christodoulou had made it clear before that bout that the winner would become an automatic challenger for Ramabolu.

Meanwhile, Boxing SA's Gauteng provincial manager Archie Nyingwa said sparring for amateur boxers wanting to graduate to the professional ranks would take place at the Westside Boxing Academy of trainer Bernie Pailman in Westbury, at the corner of Hamilton and Wellman streets, on Saturday from 7am.
