Promoters deal KO blow to corner men's fashion trends

Promoter Jeff Ellis has urged trainers and managers who will be in charge of boxers at Emperors Palace tonight to wear appropriate clothing.

Recently, some corner men have taken to wearing debonair hats, snazzy shoes and designer pants, which has made them look more like tenderpreneurs than trainers and managers.

The dress code used to be all white until sponsors came in and branded not only the boxers' shorts but also their corner men's shirts.

Ellis and his associate Rodney Berman will stage their last tournament of the year, which is dubbed Christmas Cracker, tonight.

"Image is everything," insisted Ellis. "Let us dress accordingly. Short pants will not be allowed in the corners but sponsors clothes will be acceptable."

The tournament will be used to honour Berman's longest-serving matchmaker, Reuben Rasodi.

"Can you believe Reuben matched one of my fights and also matched some of my brother's [Ron's] fights?" said Ellis, a former heavyweight boxer.

The undercard fighters include Dee Jay Kriel, Joshua Studdard, Brandon Thysse and Cowan Ray. Kriel will be up against Thabo Moabi, while Studdard will fight Edward Disolwane. Thysse will take on Mncedisi Monyai while Ray will make his professional debut against Phillip Dlamini.

Former SA junior welterweight champion Warren Joubert and Jason Bedeman will meet in a fight for territorial supremacy. They are from the south of Johannesburg.

Paul "The Natural" Kamanga and Kazakhstani Roman Zhailaouv will headline the programme in a fight for the vacant WBA Pan African welterweight title.
