Ness guided to crown by Nathan

Accomplished boxing trainer Colin "Nomakanjani" Nathan attributes his success to passion and hard work after producing his fourth South African champion.

His stable boasts the only dual world champion, IBO and WBA holder Hekkie "Hexecutioner" Budler.

Nathan, who began training fighters in 2002, guided Shaun Ness to victory for the vacant national welterweight belt last weekend. Ness outpointed Anelisa Gunqisa over 12 rounds in Port Elizabeth.

The title was relinquished by Tsiko Mulovhedzi after winning the IBO strap from Ali Funeka in April.

"This is no overnight success," said Nathan, whose other national champs are lightweight Amon Baloyi, welterweight Warren Joubert and light-heavyweight Ryno Liebenberg.

"I'm very proud of Shaun. He won the title convincingly in the opponent's backyard. You can see the scores were comprehensive at 118-110, 115-110 and 119-107," said Nathan.

"But gratitude to all the promoters, particularly Rodney Berman and Jeff Ellis, who played a role in giving Shaun fights at the beginning of his career."

Ness, 32, went into the fight boasting a third-round knockout win over Prince Dlomo in May.

That win catapulted Ness to the No1 spot, while Gunqisa had earned the No2 spot after defeating Marcel Botha in July last year. Boxers, who won regional titles under Nathan, include are Budler, Tshepo Lefele, Isaac Chilemba, Liebenberg and Xolisani Ndongeni.
