Boxers to do it all over again?

IBO junior-bantamweight champion Lwandile Sityatha and Gideon Buthelezi might have to do it all over again following the disputed split decision awarded to Sityatha last Friday, IBO president Ed Levine said yesterday.

There was widespread disagreement with the verdict of the closely contested fight last week, with the boxing fraternity holding the view what Buthelezi had landed the cleaner and more accurate blows.

While judges Matteo Montella from Italy and Capetonian Deon Dwarte scored the fight 115-113 in favour of Sityatha and Buthelezi respectively, the yawning gap in Lulama Mtya of Bhisho's 117-111 score in favour of local boxer Sityatha met with derision and was jeered by the crowd.

Speaking from Florida in the US, Levine explained: "If a protest is filed regarding the scoring, we would have to be sent five copies of the fight.

"We would then appoint a panel of highly experienced IBO judges who would then view the video and score the fight.

"If that panel clearly scores the fight for Buthelezi, a rematch may be ordered by the championships committee. However, if this panel of judges again scores the fight for Sityatha, then no action will be taken."

Buthelezi's manager Keith Rass confirmed that he had sent a letter of complaint to the IBO. He said while he had no issues with the way the fight was handled, he had problems with the verdict.

Elsewhere, Khayeni Hlungwane - who was supposed to be a stepping stone in Flo Simba's comeback - upset the bookies when he knocked Simba out with his first punch of the night at Presley's Night Club in Pretoria on Wednesday night.
