Bucs should use their chances - Lucky

Lucky Lekgwathi might not play a role on the pitch for Orlando Pirates, but the veteran defender certainly has a say off it.

The 38-year-old, who has watched Bucs' CAF Confederation Cup matches from the stands this year, is the only remaining player in the squad who featured in the Champions League semifinal defeat to CS Sfaxien in 2006.

Ahead of Sunday's Confederation Cup Group B clash against Sfaxien in Sfax, Lekgwathi has warned the current group of players not to waste chances like the class of 2006 which lost 1-0 on aggregate to the Tunisian side.

"I will never forget that day we played Sfaxien. We created 80 percent of the chances. I remember Phumudzo Manenzhe missing from the goal-line. I still ask myself how did that happen. We made one mistake, [in the second leg, and they scored. You see, teams like Sfaxien and Zamalek are very experienced and they will punish you if you don't take your chances," the veteran said.

Lekgwathi was at Mbombela Stadium a fortnight ago when the Buccaneers were defeated 2-1 by the Egyptian giants, Zamalek, after taking the lead through substitute Lehlohonolo Majoro.

The Buccaneers, who are in second place in the group on three points, dominated the first half against the five-time African champions as the likes of Thabo Rakhale and Sifiso Myeni entertained the crowd with tricks and flicks.

Zamalek were happy to let Pirates please the crowd and when the chance presented itself, they punished the home side as they moved to the top of the group on six points.

"I don't have a problem with dribbling, but you need to know when and where to do it," he said.

Lekgwathi, meanwhile, said he has been hard at work training, and that he was happy with the progress he was making after struggling with an ankle injury last season.

l Lennox Bacela has signed a two-year deal with University of Pretoria after parting ways with Pirates a fortnight ago.
