New York City FC drops Tefu Mashamaite

Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Tefu Mashamaite’s dream to join MLS side New York City FC has failed to materialise following a ten-day trial with the ambition to secure a deal ahead of the new season.

"Up until last night it looked more like a done deal with NYCFC, but I am sad to announce that the club wasn't granted a spot to bring Tefu on board and two other players they intended to sign," Mahlakgane told Kickoff official website.

"The sports director David Lee explained what really happened and expressed his disappointment as well.

“Disappointing as it is, we believe its not the end of our hunt for an international opportunity for skipper," Mahlakgane adds.

Tefu's stay at MLS looked uncertain after the club signed another defender Jefferson Mena over him.

The 30-year-old was last month crowned PSL Player of the Season, Players' Player of the Season and Defender of the Season.
