Boxer Warren ''The Warrior" Joubert has promised to disprove the old idiom ''once bitten, twice shy" when he steps into the ring at Emperors Palace, Kempton Park, on Monday night.

Joubert was stopped in his tracks in the fourth round of a national junior lightweight title fight by Sipho ''Tsunami" Taliwe in 2010, but that setback has done little to dampen his enthusiasm or detract him from his ambitions.

The vastly experience 33-year-old fighter has managed to fight his way to the No1 spot in the junior welterweight division, and will attempt to win the vacant belt in that weight class.

He will step into the ring to face third-rated Lungisa Jikani in a 12-rounder that will headline the ''Hurricane" six-bout card organised by African Ring and Golden Gloves Promotions.

''We have done our homework. I have been in the gym since I joined trainer Colin Nathan in October last year," said Joubert, who tipped the scales at 65.35kg at yesterday's pre-fight medical.

Jikani's weigh-in was conducted at home in Port Elizabeth. While it is not clear how much Jikani registered on the scales, both fighters must be within 65kg at Sunday's official weigh-in.

Joubert said he did not know much about Jikani and will rely on his experience to carry him through.

Said Nathan: ''We had a good training camp. Jikani's winning streak will come to an end on Monday night."

Recalling his defeat to Taliwe five years ago, Joubert admitted that he became careless in the ring and dropped his guard.

''I made a big mistake against Sipho. Instead of sticking to my game plan, I found myself slugging it out with him and I paid a heavy price."

Promoters Jeff Ellis and Rodney Berman will use this box-and-dine event to raise funds for former boxing great Norman ''Pangaman" Sekgapane.
