'It's good to go as underdog'

THE odds are stacked heavily against Martin Murray in his bid to oust Gennady "GGG" Golovkin as the WBA Super, interim WBC and IBO middleweight champion.

But Murray, who fights under the banner of Golden Gloves, is unfazed by the humongous challenge that faces him against the Germany-based Kazakhstan who boasts a scary knockout ratio of 28 from 31 wins.

Their showdown will take place in Monte Carlo on February 21. It will headline the "Thunderbolt" bill that will be organised by Golden Gloves' Rodney Berman at Salles des Etoiles in Monaco.

Murray, who has already fought in South Africa when he pulverised Ghanaian Ishmael Tetteh into submission in six rounds last year, has been preparing at the Hammer Gym under veteran trainer and former undefeated SA welterweight champion Harold Volbrecht in Benoni.

He has been at the Hammer Gym for the past three weeks.

Murray's chief sparring partner is current Gauteng middleweight champion Dwayne Combrink, a 22-year-old prospect who never takes a step back.

"It's a tough fight, I'm under no illusions. Golovkin is a punching power machine, but I have the tools to beat him. I expect it will be tough and I'll need to go through pain, but I'm prepared for that, whatever it takes," said the WBC Silver middleweight champion.

Reports state that Murray trains three time a day in summer heat, pushing himself beyond normal limits.

"I'm doing everything to be in the best possible condition," he said. "It's about getting to the 21st and having no regrets. I'm gonna do it. A lot of things brought me to this world title. I'm doing it for myself, for my family. When I signed with Golden Gloves, this was the end deal: a massive fight."

Said Volbrecht: "Martin is very underrated. It's good to go in as the underdog. He's the consummate pro and will leave nothing to chance.

"I don't rate Golovkin technically, but he's very strong. A lot of people may be in for a surprise come February 21."
