Safa delay naming coach

A NEW Bafana Bafana coach will be named on Saturday next week, with the SA Football Association stating yesterday they had found the man to replace Gordon Igesund.

Safa spokesman Dominic Chimhavi told Sowetan the only thing stopping the association from naming the coach was that some national executive members were away this week.

"We have the SAB national championships taking place [in Mahikeng, North West] now, and most of our NEC members are there," Chimhavi said yesterday. "This means the earliest the NEC can convene is next Saturday."

Chimhavi's assertion was reiterated by Safa chief executive Dennis Mumble.

"The position of the senior men's national team needs to be ratified by the Safa NEC; therefore, the long-awaited announcement of the new Bafana Bafana coach will be made immediately after the NEC meeting next Saturday," he said in a statement.

Speculation has been rife that Safa would employ Stephen Keshi, who led Nigeria to the second round at the World Cup, to be the next Bafana coach, but it's unclear what process the association followed when choosing their man.

Safa president Danny Jordaan is said to have led the process to find Igesund's successor while in Brazil on Fifa World Cup duties.

Hundreds of coaches, including Manuel Jose and Pim Verbeek, sent in their CVs, but Safa were known to prefer Keshi or Carlos Queiroz. However, the Portuguese coach has been offered a lucrative contract extension by Iran, who he led to the World Cup in Brazil.

"The mandate for the new coach, among others, will be to make Bafana competent performers by 2022," Chimhavi said.
