Tourney for Leo Simelane

PROMOTER Rodney Berman and his associate Jeff Ellis will stage a box-and-dine tournament at Emperors Palace on July 15 to raise funds for disabled former professional fighter Leo ''Ali" Simelane.

The former Transvaal middleweight champion had both his legs amputated due to diabetes. The lanky right-hander from Soweto was known for having adopted the Muhammad Ali rope-a-dope defensive tactics, which he mastered ever so well.

Said Berman yesterday: ''We will have an auction of various sporting memorabilia and part of the money raised will be given to Simelane."

Berman has come to the aid of many former greats who have fallen on hard times. The list includes Thulani ''Sugarboy" Malinga, Anthony ''Blue Jaguar" Morodi, Enoch ''Schoolboy" Nhlapho, Simon ''Tsipa" Skosana,Levi ''Golden Boy" Madi and promoter Joe Gumede of Khazamula Boxing Promotions.

Berman also raised about R800000 for late boxer Jacob ''Baby Jake" Matlala in 2011.

Matlala was in and out of hospital but struggling to pay for his medical bills.

Ellis, a former professional heavyweight fighter, said Paul Kamanga and Boitshepo Mandawe will top the bill on July 15 in a fight for the vacant WBA Pan African junior welterweight title.

He said Malcolm Klassen and Patrick Malinga will meet in one of the bouts. Durban Indian fighter Ricardo Hiraman will also be in action.

Simelane - who fought against top names like Morris Mohloai, Bruce McIntyre and Bushy Bester - chalked up 12 wins against 10 losses.
