Why Birds are upbeat

MOROKA Swallows coach Zeca Marques's belief that an end is in sight to his side's winless streak in 2014 will be tested when the Birds meet Mpumalanga Black Aces at KaNyamazane Stadium, outside Mbombela, tomorrow.

The Birds lost 1-0 against Orlando Pirates at Dobsonville Stadium on Wednesday, taking their barren streak to seven matches.

But Marques said he saw enough positives in the match to believe his side are on the verge of turning the corner.

After Kermit Erasmus gave Pirates a ninth-minute lead, Swallows finished particularly strongly, with Siyabonga Nomvethe hitting the post and Bucs goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa making two reflex saves to preserve his side's victory.

"I said to our players, 'On this performance, this is the last game we've lost this season' ," Marques said.

He admitted that an ageing Swallows squad will need an overhaul.

Clive Barker's mix of ball-players and hard men at promoted Aces have shown themselves capable of destructive football, and are comfortable enough in 10th place after a 2-1 away victory against Lamontville Golden Arrows. Swallows will not find things easy against a team boasting the muscle of Method Mwanjali and Onyekachi Okonkwo, and attacking abilities of Themba Zwane, Clifford Ngobeni and Abia Nale.
