Lentjies leads Maritzburg's late goal deluge

Goals rained on the match like ten pins falling in a shooting gallery, in a dizzy ending to a game that had laboured somewhat after Atusaye Nyondo snapped up an opening goal for Tuks in the 13th minute.

Trailing for the major portion of the Premier League game at the Tuks Stadium on Wednesday night, Maritzburg United turned the tables on the University of Pretoria and secured a 3-2 victory with three goals in the last 10 minutes.

Goals rained on the match like ten pins falling in a shooting gallery, in a dizzy ending to a game that had laboured somewhat after Atusaye Nyondo snapped up an opening goal for Tuks in the 13th minute.

Amazingly, four goals were scored in the last 10 minutes after Kurt Lentjies had equalised for United from the penalty spot to make the score 1-1 in the 82nd minute.

A Mario Booysen header following a pin-pont cross from Lentjies gave United the lead two minutes later, only for Thabo Mnyamane to put the university side back on level terms at 2-2 in the 90th minute.

Then with the small, but highly excited crowd seemingly resigned to the teams' sharing the spoils, the adroit Lentjies made his presence

felt once again, initiated the close-range goal from Bhongolwethu Jayiya which enabled United to secure three priceless points, and ease their way from the immediate relegation zone.

In the process, Lentjies emerged as the man-of-the-match while playing a part in all three United goals in his first appearance back in the colours of Maritzburg, after his transfer from SuperSport United last month.

Once regarded as a "boy wonder" and a potential Bafana Bafana star of the future when he was signed up by Mamelodi Sundowns in 2006, the 28 year-old Lentjies' career has not quite blossomed as anticipated while he moved from Sundowns, to Maritzburg, Bloemfontein Celtic, SuperSport United and now back to Maritzburg.

But judging on his performance against Tuks on Wednesday night, Lentjies best years in the PSL might still lie ahead of him.

New Maritzburg coach Steve Komphela, in his first appearance on the bench with the KwaZulu-based team, could not have got off to a better baptism - or been happier with his decision to bring back Lentjies to the club.
