Kaizer Chiefs defends Doctor over legends

KAIZER Chiefs general manager Bobby Motaung expressed his disappointment yesterday at the way some of their legends reacted to their exclusion from the team to face the Liverpool legends in Durban tomorrow afternoon.

Isaac "Shakes" Kungwane has been vocal on his exclusion and launched a scathing attack on Doctor Khumalo, who he blamed for being left out.

Jabu Mahlangu went on Twitter this week, also blaming Khumalo for his exclusion from the team.

Speaking on Power FM this week, Kungwane insinuated that Khumalo left him out because the Chiefs' assistant coach wanted to steal the thunder alone against Liverpool.

He said he was surprised by his exclusion because he was the captain of the team. Kungwane is a soccer analyst at SuperSport.

In his tweet, Mahlangu described Khumalo as selfish.

"Doctor Khumalo ur so selfish cause I was suppose to be part of the Kaizer Chiefs legend (sic)," Mahlangu tweeted.

"Doctor Khumalo does not like to play with other stars. U can ask any player who knows Doc [they] will tell u. He tried to discourage me at chiefs (sic) ..."

However, Khumalo has insisted that he was not responsible for selecting players for legends matches.

He was backed by Motaung. "I'm disappointed by their actions," Motaung told Sowetan yesterday.

"These guys know how things are done at Chiefs. They know that there are platforms to follow when they feel unhappy with certain things. They know where the village [Naturena, the home of Chiefs] is. What are they trying to achieve by rushing to the media about their grievances? They are trying to destroy the legacy of the chairman, but we will do everything to protect our brand."

Asked who was responsible for selecting players for legends matches, Motaung said: "We have committees at Chiefs, and one of them is responsible for the selection of players for legends matches. Doctor is not part of the selection committee, and he's being criticised unfairly."

The match takes place at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Kickoff is at 2pm.
