Kamwendo a champion at last

FORMER Orlando Pirates midfielder Joseph Kamwendo became a league champion in Mozambique at the weekend when his Maputo-based club, Liga Muculmana, secured the title with two matches to spare.

A 1-0 home win over already-relegated Matchedje ensured a third league title in the last four years for the team as they moved 10 points clear at the head of the standings.

The decisive goal came from international striker Sonito, who was on trial at Wits before the start of the season but was not signed by the Johannesburg club.

Kamwendo was dumped by the Buccaneers before the club won their back-to-back titles in 2011 and 2012, loaned out to Vasco da Gama for a season and then released.

He went back to play in Malawi but joined the Mozambican club at the start of the year.

Liga's winning side this season also included former Platinum Stars and Wits wing-back Miro.

They had previous success in the league in 2010 and 2011 and now qualify for next year's African Champions League competition.

Liga Muculmana, coached by the former Portuguese international, Lito, had started Sunday's programme needing just a point to take the title with only HCB Songo, eight points adrift, able to catch them.

But Songo lost away at Desportivo Nacala in Nampula.

Ferroviario Beira have since moved into second place as they won 2-0 away at last year's champions Maxaquene, who dropped out of the race last weekend.

There are still two more rounds of matches in the season.
