Ajax's Dutch masters sing different tune

SMOKING PEACE PIPE: Marc Overmars
SMOKING PEACE PIPE: Marc Overmars

AJAX Amsterdam director of football Marc Overmars, who threatened earlier this year to cut the Dutch club's ties with their SA affiliate, has arrived in the country to visit the Cape Town franchise.

He has held talks over the weekend with Ajax Cape Town's new owner Ari Efstathiou.

Club sources said dealings had gone swimmingly in contrast to Overmars's angry public outburst in April when Ajax fired their Dutch coach Jan Versleijen and the former Arsenal winger reacted by threatening to review their association with the beleaguered PSL club.

He was not happy with the move to get Muhsin Ertugral back with four games to go in the season, but the Turkish-born mentor did help the club stay up in the top flight and has since signed a full-time contract.

Overmars oversees all football matters at the Dutch champions.

He suggested earlier that the new leadership in Amsterdam - made up of high-profile ex-players influenced by former club great Johan Cruyff - were struggling to see the value of their association with the Cape affiliate. "We have only got Enoh Eyong and Thulani Serero from them in recent years but we had to pay a transfer sum for both," said Overmars.
