Champions League games for Soweto

SOCCER giants Orlando Pirates will play all their 2013 African Champions League group matches at their spiritual base, Orlando Stadium, in Soweto.

This was announced by Pirates administrative executive Senzo Mazingiza, who said they have already started with preparations for the campaign.

Pirates will start with their group stages campaign against 2012 Caf Confederation Cup winners AC Leopards on July 20 at 8.15pm.

Leopards are the first club from the Congo Brazzaville to reach the group stages of this tournament, which Pirates won back in 1995.

Pirates' second home game will be against Egyptian giants Zamalek on August 17.

The last group stages match of the tournament will be against holders Al-Ahly, also from Egypt, on September 21.

"There is no time to rest for us in the administration, we are busy looking for quality players to beef up the squad ahead of the start of the group stages," said Mazingiza yesterday.

"In terms of the rules and regulations, we are allowed to register five additional players. We have until the end of the month to register those players."

Pirates captain Lucky Lekgwathi said: "We are still recharging our batteries and will be back in action in two weeks' time to start preparing for the Champions League.

"There is also the Carling Black Label game against Kaizer Chiefs. The game will help us a lot in the preparations. I have made it clear that I want to win the Champions League with Pirates before I retire. I think I'm just a few months away from realising this dream."

Pirates still remain the only southern Africa club to win the Champions League. Chiefs have won the Mandela Cup, which is now the Caf Confederation Cup.
