CHANEL Simmonds yesterday won in straight sets to become the only South African player to progress to the quarterfinals of the Soweto Open.

The tournament's fifth seed eased to a 6-3 6-2 win over compatriot Natasha Fourouclas - the second South African Simmonds has knocked out of the tournament.

In her first-round match Simmonds defeated Ilze Hattingh 6-0 6-2.

The SA hopeful has a tough task today when she faces second seed Julia Glushko of Israel. She will take some heart in knowing that she has played Glushko twice before, and won their most recent showdown.

"It will be interesting to see how the altitude plays a part in our match. At least the match is against someone I've played before," Simmonds said.

"She's won one against me and I won one. On paper many may think that I will lose in the quarterfinals, but I came here to go all the way."

Glushko, who beat American Nicole Melichar 6-3 6-3, is excited about the meeting with Simmonds. "I know Chanel. I lost to her last time we played, so it's going to be very interesting out there," the Israeli said.

It was not a good day for the other South African in action yesterday, Madrie Le Roux, who lost 6-0 6-1 to seventh-seeded Samantha Murray of Great Britain.

Murray, who beat an injured fellow Brit Emily Webley-Smith in the first round, will face top seed Timea Babos of Hungary in the quarterfinals.

There were two upsets in the second round yesterday as sixth-seed Jovana Jaksic lost in straight sets 6-1 6-3 to fellow Serbian Teodora Mircic.

Eighth-seed Magda Linette of Poland, after an emphatic start, went down 6-0 4-6 4-6 in a thrilling match against Britain's Jade Windley.

The other quarterfinals will see Majeric taking on Mircic, while Windley will face off against fourth-seed Nadiya Kichenok, who beat Slovak Zuzana Zlochova 6-1, 6-3.
